EE2T11 Telecommunications A

Topics: A first course in telecommunication, with focus on the physical layer. Includes a lab course related to Signals and Systems (preparing for EPO-4)
Transport of information on the basis of telecommunication forms the backbone of our society. According to a binding international treaty among more than 180 countries, "telecommunication" covers every transfer, transmission or reception of signals, tokens, sounds, images or other data of any kind (including ideas), by means of electromagnetic systems, e.g. via radio-electric or optical means. This concise legal definition covers a.o. speech and data communication, broadcast, electronic positioning and navigation, telemetry and remote sensing (tele-observation).

In the course "Telecommunication", these applications are reduced to simple canonical communication systems and processes, represented by a block diagraon consisting of idealized subsystems such as transmission channel, filters, amplifiers, multiplexers, demodulators etc. These can be described using prior knowledge from other BSc courses such as Signals and Systems (EE2S11) and Probability (EE1M31), but the subsystems will also have to satisfy external requirements such as quality and capacity of the system. The course thus links abstract prior knowledge to more advanced engineering realities.

In Telecommunication A, the emphasis is on baseband systems and processes. We cover physical properties of simple tranmission media and noise, and the related system design criteria. aarbij gemaakt kunnen worden.

Apart from the lectures, Telecommunicaition A also consists of a Matlab lab course (size 2 EC) where skills related to Signals and Systems (EE2S11) are further developed (convolution, Fourier transformation, filter design, channel estimation, sampling). The results of the channel estimation exercise are explicitly required for EE2L21 EPO-4 (localization using a microphone array).
