Topics: Mathematical aspects of medical imaging modalities such as X-ray tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and medical ultrasound
This course is an introduction to the mathematical aspects of medical imaging. It concentrates on X-ray tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and medical ultrasound imaging. The following topics will be covered:
  • Radon transform
  • X-Ray tomography imaging and artifacts
  • Spatial encoding in MRI
  • MRI acquisition sequences
  • Principles of medical ultrasound imaging

Study Goals

This advanced course aims at providing insight and knowledge about the basic principles of tomography; the Radon transform and its applications; learning basic reconstruction approaches of X-ray tomography and understanding imaging artifacts. Understanding the fundamental concepts of magnetic resonance, Fourier spatial encoding in MRI and the design of imaging acquisition sequences together with applications in medical imaging To know the basic concepts and theory of medical ultrasound imaging and the principles, purpose and performance of the basic ultrasound imaging modalities that are used in medical practice
